Hoovers
Good information on public and mid-to-large private companies. If a selected company is featured, also find industry overviews. Note that for many of the tools you need to be a subscriber.
 
Manta - Search for US Companies
Manta offers free access to basic Dun and Bradstreet information. Search for companies by name or search by state. Free registration is required to access detailed data.
 
Manta - Search for International Companies
Choose a country and then search for companies by name. Typically includes larger companies. NOTE: although some companies are listed, their may be no data available about the firm.
 
Thomas Register of Manufacturers
Search for manufacturing companies by name, categories, product lines, and brands. Find contact information, brand names represented, and more. Download CAD drawings and even send RFPs.

From Portfolio.com, search for company information, news, and financial data on more than 500,000 public and private companies.

All Business
Search for articles and press releases about companies. For best results, enter a company name within quotation marks (e.g. "widget corporation").
 
BizJournals Article Search
Search for company news in more than 40 major markets. Great for locating information on smaller, private businesses or niche industries.
 
Blog Search
Use the Google Advanced Blog search to locate what people are saying about companies. Conduct a general search, or to locate Blogs about a specific topic, use the "In Blogs" search.
 
Mool - News Search
Use Mool to locate current and some archived news stories on companies. Instead of searching billions of Web sites, Mool limits its search to about 4,500 key news sources.
 
NewsLink Local Newspapers
Identify local newspapers that have search engines. First choose your state and then locate a newspaper. Once on the newspaper's Web site, look for a search form or "Archive" link, usually on the top or left side.
 
Samepoint Social Media Search
Enter a company name and this meta-search engine will show you blog posts, current Twitter mentions, recent news, product reviews, and more. You can even see employees who are on various networks.
 
Twitter Search - Topsy
Topsy searches recent Tweets so you can see what people are saying about a company. Enter a company name in the search form. On the results page, use the various sorting options on the left side.
 
Yahoo Finance
Search for public company information by company name or ticker symbol.  Quickly access a company's financial information, profile, key competitors, executives, industry news, and more.
Interesting Company Info
Domain Name (Web Site) Owner Lookup
Find out who owns a Web site and often get their contact information. You'll also get an overview of the requested site, with SEO and popularity rankings.
 
Indeed Job Search Listings
Indeed is a meta-search engine of other job posting sites. Make sure to set up an alert and have Indeed send you an email anytime a prospect or competitor posts a job listing.
 
Internet Archive
Use the Way Back Machine to find out what Web sites used to look like. Locate sites that no longer exist (e.g. a company went through a merger or acquisition), or visit old versions of Web sites.
 

Touchgraph Web Site Linking Relationships
Graphically see who's linking to a company, and also who's linking to the company that links to the company, etc.  Also shows relationships based on sites with similar content. Requires Java.

 
Patents and Patent Applications- Google Patent Search
Search the U.S. patent database to find information on companies and their products. Download the full patent including images. For applications, check the "Applications" box and choose a date.
